On Wednesday night at the Bathurst Paceway, Turnbull's Smooth Baht was ultra impressive in winning the two-year-old colts and geldings pace (1,730 metres) on debut.
Going from barrier seven, Turnbull settled the Somebeachsomewhere x Shoutaloud colt at the rear. He was almost 50m off the leaders as the bell sounded.
But at the 850m mark when Turnbull set off with Smooth Baht, he quickly made up ground.
He worked three wide through the final bend, was second on balancing, stormed to the lead then kicked clear of his rivals.
He won by 12.7m in a 1:54.7 mile rate, living up to his $2.50 favouritism.
Second belonged to the Josh Turnbull trained Substitooth ($5).
