The commitment comes after Mr Saunders launched a petition in December last year to provide a safer and more efficient route for all road users on the 45-kilometre section of the Mitchell Highway.
“This is a really important freight and tourism link for the north and central west regions, with thousands of vehicles travelling the highway each day,” Mr Saunders said.
“But it’s also a very busy road for local traffic travelling between Narromine and Dubbo each day for work and recreation.
He said feedback from daily users had clearly shown the need for change, and if elected he would be pleased to help make the trip much safer and easier.
Narromine Shire Mayor Craig Davies said the news was very welcome for drivers who use the road every day.
“Dugald’s had a great result with the petition he’s been running since the end of November last year, and I’m sure that has helped keep the pressure on to get this decision made,” he said.
“I think it shows there is an understanding of how important this road link is to local people, and those travelling through the region, and I look forward to the new overtaking lanes becoming a reality.”
Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said the new overtaking lanes were further proof the Nationals were committed to ensure safe and efficient travel throughout NSW.
“The Central West region is the third-largest contributor to the NSW economy, and the Nationals in government have fought hard to ensure this region gets its fair share," she said.
