I have my mother to thank for a lot things; how talk, how to walk, how to dress myself, how to talk on the phone and do the washing up at the same time, how to put food in my mouth (I get that right most of the time.)
But the 10 most important lessons I have learnt from her are ones she demonstrated by doing. As I grow older I find myself becoming more and more like her and that's something I'm very proud of.
Here's 10 things my mum taught me
1 Firstly, always be kind. I've seen my mother be kind to people that haven't necessarily been kind to her. Taught me at the most you're the bigger person, at the least you come off looking awesome… and kind.
2 Italians have got it right. Mum isn't Italian (but don't tell her that) she is a kitchen queen with a love of good wine and afternoon naps.
3 There's nothing a family dinner and a good bottle of red wine won't fix
4 On that note: life is too short to drink bad coffee and bad wine. I remember being a teenager and being mortified that my mum sent a bad coffee back to the barista. Late last year I caught myself doing the same thing!
5 Never question a mother's intuition. Mum still freaks me out by ringing when I am having a bad day. She still won't tell me how she knows...but she knows.
6 Try it out, you'll never know otherwise. When I told her I was moving to the sticks to be with my boyfriend or told her I was going to work in magazines, mum supported me the whole way.
7 If first you fail you go again. My mum failed one of her year 12 subjects. It bothered her. So, three kids later, she sat the subject again and passed. She got over her fear of exams and is now super successful! Don't mess with this woman.
8 How to make your focus about someone else. I reckon it's taken me about 23 years to make a point of asking my mum how she is. Sounds bad I know, but she is so good at making you feel like the centre of the world. Something I'm aiming to get better at.
9 Trust. My mother showed me early how important trust is in any relationship. From life partner to the person who makes your coffee everyday. Trust is important in every relationship.
10 Don't talk to someone before their morning coffee. This one goes for mum and me. Seriously.
