Cr Shields wants a centre median of trees to be planted in Talbragar and Bultje streets, as well as more greenery around the perimeter of the car park at the corner of Wingewarra and Bligh streets. He's also asked council to look into replacing the missing trees in Macquarie Street.
"Places like Bultje Street, Wingewarra Street and especially Talbragar Street are without adequate trees being planted," the mayor said.
"I am keen to look at the centre aisle having coverage down those streets, similar to what is already in Brisbane Street. Centre aisles are great for an area like Dubbo because they don't take up parking in that area."
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
There are mature trees along Macquarie Street and along the median lane in Brisbane Street and the mayor wants to build on that good work.
Cr Shields said their were missing trees in the CBD and it was becoming more and more evident as the years went on and the trees grew that there were big holes.
"It's also becoming more and more evident as community expectation slowly moves and evolves they're expecting our highly utilised areas go have proper tree canopy," he said.
I'm hoping...we can do something significant in our CBD to make it greener...
- Mayor Ben Shields
Cr Shields has called for the CEO Michael McMahon to look into the possibility of installing more trees throughout the CBD. He said it wasn't a case of "simply whacking a tree in the ground" but there need to be investigations into things like underground pipes.
The CEO will prepare a report on the mayor's plan for more greenery for the March council meeting. It will include the location the trees could be planted, the species and the cost.
"I'm hoping for this report to come back and we can do something significant in our CBD to make it greener, to make it more aesthetically pleasing, to make it stand out a bit and to make it an amenity for our residents to enjoy," Cr Shields said.
