The SensFloor technology turns the 18 rooms in the dementia wing at Bill Newton VC Gardens into a large touchpad. It can track the the movement of people within their room, show when they enter or leave, send an alarm if they're in the ensuite for too long and most importantly, send out alarms if anyone falls.

RSL LifeCare ACT and Southern Tablelands general manager Sally Renshaw said the technology - which was first implemented in Europe in 2005 - was a discreet way to monitor and enhance patient safety.

"RSL LifeCare was interested in what we could deliver in that room to give people reassurance their loved ones were bring monitored and observed, but it a way that's quite discreet," Ms Renshaw said.

As well as helping the staff to look after the residents with dementia, it can also give family members peace of mind by letting them know more about their loved one and the care they are receiving.

"Often families will say 'how long had my mum been on the floor when she fell?' or 'Mum said the staff don't come to visit her', but we have that data and can show that," Ms Renshaw said.

"We can also make sure our staff's performance and the way they're delivering their duties is to our expectations. We certainly wouldn't be using it for that but it gives us that reassurance."

Different alarms and monitors can be established for different patterns in the room and each will be personalised to the resident.

"The lady in room four might not need it but the gentleman in room ten might be up all night and we'll set it up within those time frames to make sure we know what's happening in those rooms," Ms Renshaw said.

For now the SensFloor technology is a trial but Ms Renshaw said there was a possibility if it went well that it could be installed in other RSL LifeCare facilities.

While their are other similar systems installed in aged care facilities, Bill Newton VC Gardens is the first in Australia to use SensFloor.

Bill Newton VC Gardens is a new 60 bed residential aged care facility. It has low, medium and high care areas.

The facility is expected to be open in April. Ms Renshaw said there was already a 15 person wait list.
