Mudgee is a win away from completely wiping Central West District Golf Association garrisons Duntryleague and Dubbo out of pennants contention in 2019.

After two stunning upsets to open the summer, pool A surprise packets Wellington are essentially guaranteed a finals place while the winner out of this weekend's Dubbo and Mudgee match-up, to be played at Wellington Golf Club on Sunday, will likely snap up the group's other finals qualifying position.

Bathurst is unbeaten in pool B but could represent the lone big-town presence in the post season, with Forbes the other club most likely to progress to the finals on the opposite side of the draw.

It's been years since both Dubbo and an Orange club failed to qualify for the top flight's finals and with his side entering 2019 as the three-time defending champions Mudgee skipper Mark Hale is keen to inflict even more pain on the region's biggest clubs.

"All the little towns get a buzz out of that," Hale said. 

"We don't have as many members as Duntry and Wenty and it's the same with Wellington, it's good to knock over the big wigs, a bit like the footy I suppose."

Mudgee enters this weekend's round four match-up with Dubbo down on troops but not on confidence.

The defending champions thumped Duntry 4-1 in their only clash of the season to date and despite missing long-bombing kiwi Josh Campbell for the trip to Wellington Hale's adamant his club's depth has enough quality to fill the void.

Chris Stathopoulos and Andy Gay step up into division one for this weekend's Dubbo match-up.

"And I've conned old Ozzie (John Osborn) into playing again so he's in the for the season now. He's a good old fella," Hale added.

The Mudgee No.1 said Matt Brown, Mick Wherritt and former professional Matt Gleeson would prove tough opponents in the Dubbo line-up.

"It's always tough, you can usually lose one game and get through ... so we'll see how we go," he said, adding Wellington has always had the potential to knock off the CWDGA's big dogs.

"We knew they were capable but they couldn't get their best team on the park usually and this year they seemed to have gelled together and they're keen to have a bash.

"They're going really well which is good for a club their size. It's excellent."

Wellington and Duntryleague both have round four byes in pool A, but Duntryleague's lower divisions will line-up against Wentworth in an Orange derby.

In pool B at Parkes, a win by Forbes over Cowra will all but secure the former a place in the finals alongside Bathurst.
