And 100 years in business probably seems even longer.
But that’s how long Whitney Jewellers have been around for, with a fourth-generation now running the business, from the exact same location it was started all those years ago.
The Dubbo icon celebrated a century in business this month with current owner Gina Brown saying thanks to the customers that have supported them over the years.
It’s the customers that have kept the business alive – and in the current day with online shopping robbing many small businesses of support, it’s great to have been able to speak to one that has stood the test of time within the community and is still going strong.
The support that Whitney Jewellers’ has provided to the community over the years has to be recognised.
From being the inaugural sponsor of the Whitney Cup cricket competition, to supporting the Dubbo Showgirl competition for the past 40 years, and just last year reinforcing their commitment to the region as the sponsor inaugural Fashions on the Field series.
It’s been a big ride for the business, and one we should applaud.
There have been ups and downs – a memory of the 1955 floods came to mind when Whitneys and the wider community were left with a massive clean up in shops and homes around the central business district. For the Whitney family it was three homes as well as the shop.
But there have been ups too, and those need to be remembered and celebrated.
So happy 100th birthday to Whitney Jewellers! We hope to be writing something again for you in another 100 years time.
