Should we be on water restrictions? If only to assist in supporting our neighbouring towns?
Our latest article on the water situation in western NSW shows that Cobar residents will be fined for ignoring restrictions as ‘desperate times’ come to the town.
Households are only permitted to use handheld hoses between 6pm and 9pm every second day according to the odds and evens system.
Cars may not be washed on hard services and the use of sprinklers or irrigation systems is prohibited.
In even worse news for the towns mines may be forced to close if the region doesn’t see significant rain before Christmas – which would mean job losses and a major flow on effect for the town and wider region.
The article has generated discussion about the Dubbo Regional Council on our social media page, with readers agreeing that perhaps it was time to consider water restrictions of our own, despite relying on groundwater.
One person said there would be bigger issues if our ground water runs out while replying to another that asked what would happen when there was no ground water to rely on.
A number of towns have been on restrictions for years - even light restrictions to preserve the resource as much as they could for the future.
While perhaps it is time that restrictions were considered – residents can still do their part by lowering their water consumption on their own and implementing their own self-enforced restrictions.
By voluntarily reducing water usage it will extend the existing supplies for as long as possible, though forced restrictions would do just the same.
What do you think? Should we be on restrictions? Perhaps it is time.
