Federal Member for Calare Andrew Gee assured motorists that the newly completed upgrade to turn the stretch into a sealed, seven metre wide carriageway would make trips safer.
“With higher speed traffic travelling up and down Ponto Falls Road, this upgrade puts vehicles on a safer path,” Mr Gee said.
“There were concerns about the safety of this section of road and so this upgrade will be welcomed by locals and visitors alike.”
“The Australian Government is committing $400 million each year ongoing as part of its Roads to Recovery program to ensure local councils are able to prioritise and improve the safety of local roads.”
The upgrades to Ponto Falls used $1.2 million, with $1.1 million being allocated by the Federal Government as part of their investment in Roads to Recovery, while the Dubbo Regional Council pitched in $114,616 to the effort.
Mayor of the Dubbo Region Ben Shields noted that the works were an addition to earlier safety improvements that occurred in 2017 to reseal sections of the road that had been worn down by frequent use.
“The new works took place on a two-kilometre stretch west of the Whiteleys Lane intersection and included tree clearing to reduce the risks of motorists encountering obstacles on the road,” Cr Shields said.
“We thank the Australian Government for the $8.58 million in Roads to Recovery funding over the next five years. It will enable us to continue to upgrade roads and improve safety throughout the region.”
