After years of work it was fantastic to see Macquarie Home Stay officially open this week – it’s a tribute to the team who have put in hours and hours of work to make it happen.
Starting with just a conversation on a way to help western region residents needing the services of Dubbo Hospital, the newly opened property helps residents from both near and far make life a little easier if they are needing to travel for treatment.
Macquarie Home Stay has been in the planning for the past nine years, and while it started around the need for a place for expectant mum’s from out-of-town to stay before and after giving birth, it has morphed into something greater.
Since the announcement of the Cancer Centre, the new accommodation will also be able to assist those people coming to Dubbo for treatments and surgery of any kind.
Now opened, managing director Rod Crowfoot said the general requirement to stay is that you are undergoing surgery at the Dubbo Hospital.
“We’ve got expectant mums who are forward planning and we’ve got bookings right up until June this year already.”
We wouldn’t expect anything more than to hear that the feedback towards the facility has been nothing but positive.
It’s great to talk to Mr Crowfoot who said those people who have stayed have already said the centre feels comfortable and like a home with all the basics they need.
“We have air conditioning and great common spaces; certainly the kitchen is spacious and easy to use.
“We are set up as self-catering, the rooms have a fridge in them for storing food and the shared common space is available for those who need to stay for an extended time and would like to cook their own meals, we want this to be a home-away-from-home for our guests.”
And the best news to come from the opening – there are already plans to expand the accommodation service.
With an eight acre site, the master plan will accommodate more than 100 rooms, and it won’t just be those undergoing treatment at hospital that can use the accommodation, the bigger plan will also look at medical students studying at the hospital.
From what we can see, things are only going to get bigger for the Macquarie Home Stay team, but for now give yourselves a pat on the back, – because what you have done already is of great benefit to so many.
