After winning the toss and sending Rugby in to bat RSL Colts’ bowlers demolished the Rugby batting order in a little over 30 overs.
Off-spinner Mitch Ashford was the pick of the bowlers with 3/30 of seven overs. He was ably supported by fellow offie Wes Giddings (2/16) off four overs.
Colts president Brad Cox was the star with the bat, steering his side to victory with 51 not out.
“We were only chasing a small total, so it was good to stay out there and guide the team home,” Cox said.
But batting was not easy according to Cox.
“The wicket had a bit in it, so I never felt like I was in at all. “Every ball could get you out; it was moving around a bit.
“We were a bit concerned that if we lost one wicket, we could lose a few in a row.
“I thought Greg Buckley batted well, we were two for not many early, and we steadied the ship a bit, and Tom Atlee came out and hit a few which took the pressure off. When he got out, we only needed 20 more to win, so it was good to stay until the end and steer the team home.”
Cox paid tribute to his sides two spinners who took five wickets between them.
“Mitch bowled pretty well he also managed a great caught and bowled which is always good to get when you’re a spinner,” he said.
“The grass was pretty long, so Mitch was able to get a bit of bounce and turn which troubled their batsmen and Wes doesn't turn it a lot normally, but he got it to turn a bit on the day which was pleasing.”
“I thought everyone bowled pretty well actually.”
Cox acknowledged his team had some improving to do before the finals.
“We have a got a bit of improvement to do, we have a couple of big games coming up against CYMS and Newtown, so if we can win them, we we’ll have a safe finals spot,” he said.
“We are a bit of an older side, so I think securing a top spot will be good for us going into the finals.”
The Colts’ president recognised Saturday’s win was pretty special.
“It was a good day for the club to win in all grades and take the Danny Bower Cup,” he said.
“Our players like playing for the cup, and we like the tradition of going back to a club after the game and socialising with the Rugby players, it makes the game pretty special.
“Remembering Danny's contribution to both clubs is a good tradition to have and keep going.”
