While there are no fires burning across the Orana region at the moment, NSW Rural Fire Service Orana team manager superintendent Lyndon Weiland said things could change in an instant.
“We are concerned about the lightning that is meant to be coming through this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon and are just appealing for everyone to be careful with what they are doing,” he said.
“It’s a very volatile environment.”
A total fire ban was in place on Wednesday for the Central Ranges region, but not for the Central West Slopes and Plains which includes Dubbo.
This could change at a moments notice.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and a total fire ban could be put on at any stage if we think it’s necessary.”
The NSW RFS strongly recommends reconsidering activities such as such using a tractor or slashing, to help reduce the chance of a fire starting on your property.
Mr Weiland said the conditions meant ignition would be very easy at the moment and as simple as driving a vehicle or motorbike through long grass.
“I ask people not to do it. And if they really need to then please do it early in the morning and have firefighter equipment close by.”
Mr Weiland also had a warning for anyone camping along the rivers and reserves in the Orana area.
“With the weather at the moment, lighting a fire wouldn’t be very smart.
“You don’t need warmth at night, and for anyone looking to have a tea I would suggest enjoying a cool drink instead. You can also go with salads for meals, that way you don’t have to cook anything.”
