Dubbo Westview Drive-In and Dubbo Cars and Coffee have teamed up for a one-off screening of American Graffiti.
Organisers report there has already been interest from across western NSW.
A first round of tickets available to people bringing pre-1985 “classic, custom, hot rod or street machine” vehicles is getting an “excellent response”.
A second round of tickets for the general public will go on sale from February 15.
The screening will take place on Saturday March 2, the night before Dubbo Cars and Coffee holds its regular monthly meet in Victoria Park.
Dubbo Cars and Coffee organiser Owen De Carle hopes car enthusiasts will travel to the city to relive old times across the whole weekend.
Growing up at Dubbo, he recalled going to the drive-in first as a child with his parents, and later with his mates before the icon closed.
Its revival was providing an opportunity for an experience across a weekend.
Mr De Carle suggested owners of pre-1985 cars could visit Taronga Western Plains Zoo on Saturday, head to the drive-in on Saturday night, and then show off their pride and joy in Victoria Park on Sunday.
“American Graffiti is probably the most famous, the best car culture movie,” he said.
The 1973 coming-of-age comedy film was directed by George Lucas and starred Richard Dreyfuss, Harrison Ford and Ron Howard.
“It’s a really cool movie, especially if you like cars,” Mr De Carle said.
The driving force behind Dubbo Cars and Coffee will view the outdoor screen from his red 1962 Chev Bel-Air.
Mr De Carle encouraged anyone with a pre-1985 car to secure their tickets now and come along, and the general public wishing to soak up the atmosphere to buy tickets from February 15.
Dubbo Westview Drive-In operator Jason Yelverton said he expected the screening would be one of the biggest they had held.
Tickets had already been sold to people as far away as Wallerawang, Orange, Grenfell, Bathurst, Parkes, Mudgee and Pipers Flat, as well as to Dubbo, Wellington and Narromine, he reported.
