Going into Monday’s opening match of the Western NSW Under 15 Carnival Dubbo Coach Marty Nelson asked his team to enjoy their cricket and enjoy the experience.
Dubbo’s opening match against ACT Yellow showcased how even the talent distribution in the team is, with no individual outshining another.
The Under 15 boys reached 117 of 36 overs at Jack Brabham 4 in Orange with many of the batsmen throwing away their wickets with poor shot selection.
But a sensational team effort in the field gave Dubbo a first-up win, bowling ACT out for 85 off 44.2 overs.
Nelson was happy with the win and sees the Under 15 carnival as a reward for the players who have represented Dubbo in the past.
“We’ve got a good mix of kids that have played together for a few years so there is good camaraderie among the boys and that comes in handy when you find you have to defend a total like 117,” he said.
“The ACT bowled well, they bowled at the stumps, our boys were a bit rusty, some haven’t played since Christmas, but when it came time to bowl, we did well, so that’s pleasing.”
“Our boys have bowled as a team; it was good to see the wickets were pretty evenly spread across the board.”
Nelson said balance is the strength of the Under 15s.
“This is a very well balanced side,” he said.
“Brad Deveigne batted well he got 27 and he bowled well, so he’s had a good day.
“Campbell Watts was also good with the ball and Lawson Shepherd, who got three, caused the ACT some trouble.
“Batting wise we have Nate Ambler and Ryan Maxwell who got 26 this morning; they should do well at the carnival. We have all-rounders, Preston Beauchamp and Pat Nelson, they’ll play an essential role for us, but really our strength is that our talent is spread evenly, most of our kids can bat and bowl well.
“We are very competitive and we play Penrith on Tuesday and that will be a good challenge also.
“We just want to give the players as much playing time as possible and if we do win that is a bonus, the boys enjoy the week away together and its good for their growth as cricketers and young men.”
