Haaring said while it’s always good to win, a first win is special especially after a varied preparation.

“It’s good to get the first win, the first race of the day too, it’s a good way to start,” he said.

“We’ve been all over the place really, I have been racing her over four hundred a few times and trying her between four hundred and three hundred and she is well suited to the four-hundred it seems.

“She still wanted to lose the race a few times today, but she came good in the end.”

Arrogant Katie went wide on the first corner and when she went wide again on the home corner, Haaring thought she’d thrown the race away.

“She has a winning instinct I think, she is pretty keen that’s to her advantage and even when I thought she might have thrown this one away she fought back which was pleasing to see,” he said.

“I was confident when we led her out this morning, she had a good box, coming out of two and the field was not that strong, but she has a habit of running wide which always worries me, she has done that before and most recently she faded after running wide from an inside box. 

“She normally likes to be in front, she’s a good beginner, but today out of that box she just decided to give herself a bit of room first and then she knuckled down to win.”
