The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds and gusty thunderstorm just before 3pm.
What followed was a lightning strike show across the region and widespread blackouts.
But even as the storm continued to rumble, photos were being shared on social media of rain, lightning and afterwards a rainbow.
