The Cougars’ bonus point win over South Dubbo saw them move to the top of the RSL-Whitney Cup ladder heading into the Christmas break, and it also secured the Sam Fraser Memorial Cup for this season.

The CYMS and South Dubbo club day was well attended and all sides stayed at the Lady Cutler Complex post match, where Sam’s father, Mick, was on hand to present Cougars captain Ben Knaggs with the cup.

The two sides play for the prize named in honour of former South Dubbo player who passed away in December of 2016.

CYMS won three of the four games played across all grades on Saturday, the first grade match finishing in a relatively comfortable four-wicket win for the Cougars.

Bowling first, the Cougars made early inroads as Ben Strachan (3-18) removed both Josh Williams (0) and James Duffy (12).

Mat Finlay was controlled early and then punished anything loose on his way to making 53, but very few other Souths batsmen got going, as Bailey Edmunds (4-32) knocked over the lower and middle order.

The total of 154 was not overly-imposing but Souths overcame say wayward bowling early to have CYMS 3-48 early in the chase.

Knaggs made a mature 42 to put his side firmly in control and while there was some late wobbles with the bat the Cougars reached the target in the 29^th over.

Scott Tucker took 3-25 for Souths.

The result sees CYMS go one point clear at the top while Colts and Newtown are both locked together.

Souths remains without a win at the bottom of the ladder.

The competition returns on January 14 with CYMS and Colts meeting in a one-day match in that round.
