In the afternoon, the Dubbo District Concert Band performed a variety of Christmas songs and carols at the Holy Trinity Church. The songs were lead by Allyn Smith, who encouraged the crowd to sing along as loud as they could.
The band followed it up with a performance at the Community Carols by Candlelight.
Hundreds flocked to Victoria Park with their picnic rugs and chairs to sing along to Silent Night and Jingle Bells at the evening carols.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
Dubbo District Concert Band conductor Neil Ryan said they really enjoyed performing the traditional songs.
“The Christmas carols don’t change much but playing in the acoustic at the church is really nice. We’re really drawn to that,” Mr Ryan said.
“And I guess even though it’s the same material, we as musicians get to work on it and improve it and refine it and hopefully make our product just that bit better every time. That’s what we aim to do and Christmas carols are a great way to do it.”
Mr Ryan said the concert at Holy Trinity Church was a way for people to hear some Christmas carols if they didn’t want to stay up to attend the later event in Victoria Park.
“We’ve generally done it each year for a couple of years not and it’s worked out quite well. We really enjoy it.”
It also kept the band on its toes, the conductor said.
“We have a pretty set sort of group that tend to follow us and come to our concerts which is awesome but we generally see a handful of new faces each time which is fantastic,” Mr Ryan said.
“That’s what we want, to get more people involved in live music.”
The Dubbo District Concert Band got right into the Christmas spirit, Mr Ryan said. They also performed carols at Westhaven.
The Community Carols by Candlelight was hosted by the Rotary Club of Dubbo West.
The singing was so loud and the glowing candles were so bright they even attracted Santa Claus himself.
Carols were also in the air on Saturday night as the Dubbo Presbyterian Church hosted an event for all ages.
