Western NSW Primary Health Network funds after hours services, including a GP clinic in Dubbo for patients who have an urgent but non-emergency medical condition and are unable to wait until regular clinic hours. It’s coordinated by Marathon Health.
The clinic operates from 2pm to 6pm on weekends and public holidays, however it will be closed on Christmas Day.
ALSO MAKING NEWS:
A medical telephone service that connects clients to local GPs for advice after hours, seven days a week will be available. It can be reached on 6884 2100.
There’s also an after-hours GP helpline run by Healthdirect that connects callers to a registered nurse who assesses their condition over the phone. The number to call is 1800 022 222.
WNSW PHN CEO Andrew Harvey said the helplines were a great option for when someone’s regular GP was closed and they weren’t sure where else to go.
He said the telephone-based GPs provided immediate advice on what to do about someone’s health concern and could direct them to their nearest open service if needed.
“The GP is able to advise people on the most appropriate next step. In most cases, people receive medical advice that enables them to manage their condition at home until they can get an appointment with their regular doctor. Callers can better understand their condition and more accurately explain it to their regular doctor when they see them,” Mr Harvey said.
While some routine medical services will be closed over the Christmas and New Year period due to a reduction in demand, emergency services will be available.
