RMS representatives recently told shop owners they would lose shopfront parking due to the construction of traffic lights at the Victoria Street and Newell Highway roundabout.
An RMS spokesperson said no decision had been made about parking on Victoria Street.
But Victoria Street shop landlord and president of the Victoria Street Beautification Committee Kath Skinner said that is not good enough.
"We are all still nervous about this because the RMS has given us no time-frame for further consultation and they've given us no official retraction of the proposed plan to take away all our parking," she said.
"We want it in writing and ironclad that it's off the table.
“But it’s not just the loss of parking that needs to be discussed with the RMS, we also need to talk about the inappropriateness of having B-Triples through this corridor and within the 60 km/h zone of Dubbo generally and the need for a more appropriate avenue of a freight bypass and or ring road.”
Dubbo Councillor Vicki Etheridge said the council is “standing right beside” shop owners and the committee.
“We have assured them that council will fight tooth and nail alongside them because the proposal is wrong and the way it was put to them was outrageous,” she said.
“We think the plan to take the parking away is mad, we can see the futility of the plan, it would be commercial murder, so we do need an official retraction from the RMS.
“Chris Devitt (Director of Infrastructure) is pressuring them to come forward with a retraction. He has also come up with a solid and workable plan that would not see parking removed.
“Council has already spent $50,000 on designs for the beautification of the Victoria Street shopping precinct and now the RMS has thrown all that in the air due to an inconsiderate and clearly flawed plan.”
Dubbo MP Troy Grant said RMS consultation with potentially affected stakeholders is appropriate to develop a design.
“One potential design which has caused angst is only that, a potential design,” he said.
“RMS has clearly said no decisions had been made.”
