Christies Crackerjacks captain Joe Haylock believes getting off to a good start is the key to winning Friday night’s McDonald’s Megahit match and is looking to some experienced players and a debutant to provide the magic.
The Crackerjacks, Macquarie’s Megahit side, lost its opening match of the 2018/19 Twenty20 campaign but will go into Friday night’s match at Victoria Park Number One Oval against the Rugby Liberty One Steelers with a positive attitude.
Haylock said he hopes to win the toss and bat then post a big enough total to defend successfully.
“Jason Green and Ricky Medway are top batsmen and if they get us off to a good start we are in with a reasonable chance of posting a good total,” he said.
“The ball does travel further in the night games; you often see a ball flying over the head of the more inexperienced players.
“We will be as positive as we can when we bat.”
Rugby president Steven Wheeler said his club would be playing every game in the Megahit competition to win.
“This is not a hit and giggle for us; we are in it to win it,” he said.
“We won the Megahit last year and it’s a lucrative thing to win so we will take it seriously and play to a plan.
“Keep an eye on Kodis Sissian he has played the last two first-grade games and played well and he is a player we have high hopes for, he has some ability.
“We have a good even mix of experienced and young players in all of our teams, but we’re not just out there to make up the numbers.”
The Christies Crackerjacks captain said he also views the Megahit as a good competition to give the clubs young players a chance.
“The Megahit is a good way to expose the younger players to some pressure to see if they can handle it for the first-grade competition,” Haylock said.
“Jake Cuthill will make his night cricket debut for us in this game and it is good to see him get a go.
“He is a talented off-spinner and we’ll look to bowl him during the middle overs.”
Haylock said he also hopes a club stalwart can rise to the occasion against Rugby.
“Dicko (Jeremy Dickson) has been in good second-grade form and he top scored in our last Megahit game, so we will be counting on him to do well on Friday night.”
Dickson said his club always aims to win but also to entertain those that come to watch.
“We like to involve the crowd with some exciting cricket, that’s for sure,” he said. “I think the Megahit helps the blokes hone some skills and we think the game against Rugby will be evenly matched.”
