The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) data released on Wednesday details statewide crime figures for the 12 months to September 2018.

In Orana and the Far West, incidents in eight of the 17 reported crime categories have increased during the past year, while nine have dropped.

The biggest increase was cases of robbery with a weapon (not a firearm) jumped significantly from nine cases in the 12 months to September 2017, to 29 cases in the year to September 2018 – an increase of 22.2 per cent.

Cases of domestic violence related assault also experienced a spike rising from 1159 incidents to 1392 – a jump of 20.1 per cent.

Among the other increases were cases of fraud which was up from 639 to 690 (8.0 per cent), and break and enter non-dwelling which jumped from 534 to 562 (5.2 per cent)

However, the BOCSAR data also shows that many crime categories recorded a decrease in the number of incidents, with the biggest being the number of sexual assaults which dropped from 238 to 172 (down 38.4 per cent).

There was also a drop in the number of steal from person cases, this fell from 82 to 65 (a drop of 26.2 per cent).

The number break and enter dwelling incident also fell – from 1529 to 1381 (10.7 per cent).

In Orana and the Far West there was the equivalent of more than six malicious damage cases reported every day during the past 12 months with 2451 which was up 6.0 per cent on the 2313 in the previous reporting period.

A statement by NSW Police said despite recorded crime incidents generally remaining stable or falling, the number of people proceeded against to court by police across NSW during the last 24 months rose by nearly 3000 to 164,123.

“This is due to an increased number of prosecutions for drug and theft offences, intimidation and breaching AVOs [Apprehended Violence Order],” the statement read.

“The number of people to referred to a youth justice conference also increased by 43.8 per cent (from 584 in the 12 months to September 2017 to 840 in the 12 months to September 2018).”
