Five Dubbo Cycle Club Under-17 riders travelled to Anna Mears Velodrome in Brisbane on the weekend to compete in the third round of cycling’s National Junior Track Series. Racing in very warm conditions Danny Barber performed very well and has managed to extend his overall lead in the Under-17 Men’s category.

Barber was in fine form, dominating the sprint distance events and backing up to finish well in the longer distance races. Barber teamed with Dylan Eather to finish second in a hotly contested Maddison event over 40 laps of the velodrome. Eather rode extremely well all weekend to stay in second place overall out of the 87 riders contesting the under-17s men’s category from around Australia. Mitchell Hines put in some good rides to consolidate his position in 14th overall.
Cousins Haylee and Zara Fuller contested the under-17s Women’s category. Haylee teamed up with Bathurst rider Kalinda Robinson to take 2nd place in the Maddison event and backed up that result with 2nd places in the scratch and elimination races to be in 7th place in the series.
The only 1st year under-17s rider from Dubbo to travel to Brisbane, Zara Fuller, rode well to be sitting in 27th place out of the 58 riders in the series.
The Western Region Academy of Sport team, which the riders ride for in this series, is sitting in 1st place overall, ahead of much fancied teams from across the country.
In club news the Dubbo Cycle Club championships are well under way with the Time Trial, Points Race and Scratch races already contested. Time Trial winners were Kurt Eather in A-grade, Vaughn Eather in B-grade, Jason Canobie in C-grade and Helen Hines in D-grade. Danny Barber set the fastest time of the night winning the under-17s men’s title while Haylee Fuller won the Under-17 women’s. Trent Hines took out Under-15s event with Imogen Fuller winning the under-13s’s, Jarryd Fuller the U/11’s and Cooper Farr the U/9 event.
The Point Score races saw some very similar names taking out the wins with Oceania champion Kurt Eather again too strong in A-grade, Australian cyclist of the year nominee Simone Grounds took out B-grade with Catherine Fuller and Helen Hines winning C and D grades. Danny Barber was able to hold on to win the Under-17 men’s with Haylee Fuller also backing up to win the Under-17 women’s event. Trent Hines was victorious over a fast riding Isabelle Russell in the under-15s Points race.
The Scratch race championship again saw father and son take out A and B-grade with Kurt Eather winning A grade and Vaughn Eather winning B-grade, Catherine Fuller and Helen Hines won C and D grade respectively. Danny Barber and Haylee Fuller took out the under-17s races with Isabelle Russel showing the boys how it is done to win the under-15s race. A fast finishing Imogen Fuller won in the under-13s race while cousin Jarryd Fuller took out the under-11 title.
Racing continues on Thursday night with championship pursuit titles on the line. Racing starts at 6pm.
