Orana Mid-Western Police District police general duties and highway patrol officers, paramedics and the rural fire service attended the scene of the crash on Sunday.
Orana Mid-Western Police District Inspector Keith Ridley said the crash occurred about 6.30am when the vehicle with six passengers was travelling north from Gilgandra to Gulargambone.
“About 30 kilometres north of Gilgandra the vehicle left the side of the road, hit some gravel and has commenced to roll and it has rolled several times and come to a standstill on the side of the road,” Inspector Ridley said.
“Unfortunately the male driver, an 18-year-old from Coonamble was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries.
“A further five passengers were in the vehicle, a 16-year-old male that was in the front passenger seat of the vehicle suffered some critical head injuries.”
The young male was transported to Dubbo Hospital and then to Westmead hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
“There were four male youth in the vehicle at 17, 16, 14, and 13 years of age and they were in the rear passenger seat,” Inspector Ridley said.
“All of those young men were taken to Gilgandra and Dubbo hospital for minor injuries and have since now been released.”
Police are still investigating the cause of the crash, and have appealed for anyone with information who may be able to assist police to come forward.
“Anyone with information should come forward, please contact Dubbo Police Station 6883 1599 and Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.”
Inspector Ridley said at this stage the cause was still undetermined however, speed may have been a factor “based on the vehicle losing control on a bend”.
“Alcohol is one of the lines of the inquiry however, it may be necessary to get further witness statements as well as evidence from the hospital,” Inspector Ridley said.
“There may have been some alcohol involved in relation to the accident but I can’t tell you what they were attending.”
He said at this stage there were no plans to charge any of the passengers of the vehicle, however that line of inquiry could continue as police investigate.
