Conservatorium staff travelled to schools in Dubbo, Gilgandra, Narromine, Warren and Wellington each week, giving students the opportunity to learn an instrument and play in their school band. Wind, brass, strings, guitar, classroom music and early childhood music were taught onsite at Orana region schools and pre-schools by conservatorium staff.

Early in 2018, Macquarie Conservatorium received the exciting news that they had placed in the top five of the 2017 NSW Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) results in the category, “Most Outstanding Studio or Music School – Preliminary to Grade 6.”
An extraordinary achievement for a regional conservatorium, this was judged across all NSW AMEB instrumental exam entries: metropolitan and regional, private teachers, schools, music-teaching businesses and other conservatoriums.
In June, many of the City of Dubbo Eisteddfod’s major prizes and scholarships were awarded to conservatorium students and ensembles, with violin student India de Sousa Shaw awarded the Daily Liberal Instrumental Scholarship.
Conservatorium wind and brass students Robin Hall, Jessica Hall, Sarah Hall, Simon Ramirez and Sarah Williamson were all selected for the NSW Department of Education “West of the Divide Band” that is set to tour the UK in January, 2019.
Two conservatorium students, India de Sousa Shaw and Emma Newby, were also selected to join the Regional Youth Orchestra NSW, taking part in inspiring projects at the Sydney Opera House with the Australian World Orchestra and the Staatskapelle Berlin, as well as performing in the finale concert of the Artstate Festival in Bathurst.
The conservatorium’s popular Youth Music Theatre Program, for ages 8 -12, continued this year with sold-out performances for large groups from schools and preschools, while the conservatorium’s Youth Chorus performed with Opera Australia in their touring production of Madama Butterfly at Dubbo Regional Theatre.
Throughout 2018 visiting artists including composer Tim Hansen, jazz vocalist Emma Pask, jazz pianist Matt McMahon, composer Elena Kats-Chernin and pianist Tamara-Anna Cislowska, all gave inspiring workshops for secondary school students.
