Students from high schools in Dubbo travelled to Cowra High School to take part in an annual maths meet-up allowing them to plan for their final year of math’s study.
The brain child of Cowra High School math’s teacher Steve Howard and Helen Vere from Parkes High School, the meet-up has had exponential growth, with more than 100 students attending this year.
Students travelled to Cowra from the wider region including school’s in Dubbo, Wellington, Orange, Gilgandra, Canowindra, Blayney, Young and Grenfell.
Students who complete the study day are drawn from the Mathematics Extension One and Extension Two Units that are offered in Year 12 studies.

Mr Howard said the main reason for starting the day came from his belief most of the advice kids receive for HSC should be given out well before the end of their studies.
“A lot of the hints would be better given to the kids right at the start, 12 months out,” he said.
“They’ve got more time to use them, develop their brain and develop their mathematical ability.”
Mr Howard said there is a benefit to be had by involving students further afield from Cowra and Parkes.
“What a lot of small schools miss out on is they don’t see their ‘competition,’ for want of a better word.
“They’ve got more of an idea of the level of other people.”
