Conservatorium director Vivienne Winther reports of a visit by a film crew during a rehearsal last week for Lights, Camel, Action!
“Macquarie Conservatorium’s Youth Music Theatre students were thrilled to be visited at a rehearsal of their Christmas musical by a film crew from the NSW government, in Dubbo to make a video about the advantages and activities on offer for families who move from the city to a regional town,” she said.
“Our Youth Music Theatre program is a good example of the high quality, innovative and enjoyable music education programs Macquarie Conservatorium provides to the local community, and it was rewarding to see this recognised as an asset to our town by the NSW government.
“Programs like our Youth Music Theatre Workshop, Youth Chorus, Macquarie Intermediate Band and our high quality instrumental tuition and band programs in schools are equal to anything offered in big cities, and are certainly of interest to parents considering what is available in a town like Dubbo for their kids.”
The public is invited to Lights, Camel, Action! starting at 4pm on Sunday at the conservatorium. Sold-out shows the following day are for preschoolers and schoolchildren.
Youth Music Theatre teacher and the musical’s director, Camilla Ward, reports that it takes the form of a television show featuring the “familiar characters of the traditional story”.
“The Bethlehem Broadcasting Company is recording a dazzling dance show to celebrate the birth of Jesus,” she said.
“All the Christmas story celebrities have come together to recall their roles in the miraculous story, including some funky camels and a disco star.”
The Youth Music Theatre students, aged eight to 12 years, develop their singing, acting and movement skills through training activities, and rehearsing and performing shows.
“The students really enjoy expressing themselves and working together with each other on a big project,” said Raelene Burn, conservatorium teacher and the musical director of Lights, Camel, Action!
“We do two productions a year, telling stories through music and drama, using physical theatre, and simple costumes and props,” she said.
Ms Ward said the Christmas musical had toe-tapping songs, colourful costumes and comical characters, and was ideal entertainment for kids of all ages and their families.
