Patterson belted twelve fours and three sixes in his rapid-fire 75 not out as Newtown passed Rugby’s total of 110 in just the 18th over.
One of the cleanest hitters of a ball in Western Zone, Patterson moved up to number three in order to boost his side’s chances of a bonus point win and he did just that.
While he was the hero with the bat, it was a strong all-round performance with the ball which set the tone early on.
Rugby, going into the game after scoring a first win of the season last round, never got going after winning the toss and batting.
The biggest partnership was the seventh-wicket stand between Campbell Rose and Jacob Bruce and that yielded 30 runs.
It was nowhere near enough with Rose’s 40 the only highlight as Rugby was bowled out for just 110.
Steve Skinner claimed 3-17 from six overs after new ball bowlers Patterson (1-19 from seven) and Trent Smith (2-15 from six) had knocked over the top order.
Lee Price also chimed in with a handy 2-27 from six.
Newtown’s powerful batting lineup was always a heavily favoured to reach the target with the main interest being around ho quickly it would be reached.
Leg-spinner Adrian Carey (1-50) opened the bowling for Rugby and struck in his first over, removing Dan Holland, but that was as good as things got for his side.
Patterson got off the mark with a boundary and that set the standard for his innings.
He drove the Tigers to the target while Wayne Dunlop kept things ticking over down the other end.
Dunlop finished unbeaten in what was a 105-run partnership.
The double bonus point win, Newtown’s second of the season, sees them move back into a share of top spot with RSL-Colts.
CYMS is four points back in third and then there’s a 14-point gap to both Macquarie and Rugby on nine points.
South Dubbo, the only side without a win yet this season, is at the foot of the ladder with five points.
