Ms Andrews worked behind the scenes on the upcoming comedy The Angus Project. The ABC show focuses on Angus (Angus Thompson), an aspiring sports journalist at the Bathurst Gazette with cerebral palsy and his carer Nina (Nina Oyama), a flailing university student.

Ms Andrews and Ms Oyama were in the same Bachelor of Communications Theatre Media course in Bathurst. While she loved performing, Ms Andrews said also loved using her beauty therapy training to work behind-the-scenes.

Working on The Angus Project was a great opportunity to be on a professional film set, Ms Andrews said. After arriving early to do the casts’ hair and makeup, she would help with any props or setting up, then monitor the action to see if any touch-ups were needed.

“If a hair was flicked over the shoulder than the hair would have to remain in that way. It’s really important,” Ms Andrews said.

“If you do leave that scene and you want to come back to it later you’ve got to be really mindful that they match every single time. If there’s dirt in a space you’ve got to make sure there’s dirt in that exact same space next time.”

The show is inspired by Mr Thompson and Ms Oyama’s real relationship from their time at university, going to parties, getting drunk and taking drugs. It came about because they were sick of the sanitised, inspirational version of disability often portrayed in the media.

Ms Andrews said she thought nothing but positive things about the show.

“From what I know and the feedback I’ve got they’re honestly sending ripples through the comedy industry. I currently work at Orana Arts and I can really see the difference between Sydney content and how hard it is for us regional artists to kind of get that experience and that exposure,” she said.

“The fact that Nina and Angus have bought this incredible show out to a rural area and have given us rural artists more opportunity is absolutely mind-blowing and I think it’s a good starting point for others to do the same.”

The Angus Projects airs on ABC TV on December 4.
