An Orana Mid-Western Police District male sergeant and female constable were allegedly assaulted by a 30-year-old man during the arrest at a Third Avenue address.
They attended the scene after receiving a concern of welfare report for an alleged domestic incident.
Police district commander superintendent Peter McKenna said he was very “proud” of the two officers involved.
“About 7:00pm last night two police officers attended a domestic violence incident in Narromine and it is alleged they witnessed a male person assaulting a female in a caravan,” Supt. McKenna said.
“They went to the aid of the female and it is alleged the offender then violently struggled with the officers in a confined space.
“The officers struggled with the male while further police officers were called to the scene.”
Superintendent Peter McKenna said the alleged struggle lasted for about 30 minutes until police reinforcements arrived and the male was “taken into custody”.
Inspector Dan Skelly said when the two officers put out a call for urgent back-up their colleagues didn’t hesitate to come to their aid.
“The six police responding to the call for help realised their police colleagues were in urgent need of assistance and wasted no time in providing that assistance,” Insp. Dan Skelly said.
“It was a great example of police work.
“The two officers put their own safety behind the safety of the community ... due to all of their actions it prevented a person from potentially hurting themselves and possibly others.”
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated both police officers and the male before they were all taken to hospital.
“The male police officer suffered a soft tissue injury to his hand and the female police officer suffered cuts, abrasions and was checked for concussion,” Supt McKenna said.
Both police officers were released from hospital later that evening.

Police believed the offender was under the influence of drugs.
“While police understand the job at times is going to be physical, violent incidents like this for a prolonged period are very rare,” Supt. McKenna said.
“I’m very proud of the officers involved but I will never accept anyone attacking police whether it’s under the influence of drugs or alcohol and those persons will always feel the full weight of the law.
“To actually be in a struggle for up to half an hour is quite incredible.”
