Everyone in the racing game knows it, and unfortunately for Tyler Everingham he now knows exactly how quickly things can change.
Racing in one-off Kumho Tyre Australian V8 Touring Cars Series event at Surfers Paradise on the weekend, the Dubbo teenager was looking well-placed to continue his fine year with another overall victory.
But things went wrong during the final day of racing.
Everingham was leading during Sunday morning’s but crashed badly on turn 11.
A broken right-front suspension component looked to cause the MW Motorsport Ford to ended up in the barriers.
The teenager emerged unscathed from the incident, though his car was heavily damaged, and the race was slowed under the safety car.
The damage meant Everingham missed the afternoon’s final race of the round and ruined his chances of overall victory.
Jon McCorkindale survived the drama to finish the overall winner.
