On Friday evening the committee posted on social media the event would be postponed due to “severe weather warnings posted by SES and Bureau of meteorology”.
“While we understand that warnings may not always be accurate, it is paramount that we think of the safety of the Relayers and their families, therefore can not risk going ahead with the Relay,” the post read.
“The forecast is for severe thunderstorms including damaging winds, which we have learnt from last year's event can be unpredictable and dangerous.
“This decision comes with great sorrow, however, the fight to beat cancer continues and we will work together as a committee to organise another date for the event in the near future.”
The Relay for Life Committee apologised for the inconvenience the cancellation may have caused and wished everyone a safe weekend.
