The city put on a fabulous show for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s visit on Wednesday, Dubbo Regional Council mayor Ben Shields says.
And the big show was not just on the day of the visit, Cr Shields said, but in the weeks leading up to Harry and Meghan’s tour around the city.
Businesses, homes and even vehicles on the roads were decorated with flags, posters, pictures and other royal memorabilia to mark the event.
Then, on Wednesday, an estimated 10,000 people poured into Victoria Park for the only opportunity to see the royal couple.
“It was full, it was very full and it didn’t matter how much it rained,” Cr Shields said of the huge crowds in the park.
“I think Dubbo did really well.”
Cr Shields also praised the businesses and people who dressed up the town, their shops and homes in all manner of royal memorabilia.
“We certainly encouraged it and we had a competition [to dress up shop front windows],” he said.
“I think they went above and beyond to make sure Dubbo shone.
“I think it looked so good in front of the nation, the city as a whole did exceptionally well.
“Country hospitality is alive and well in Dubbo.”
Also on the agenda for the Duke and Duchess during their visit was a visit to the Royal Flying Doctor Service at Dubbo Airport, followed by a stop in at a drought-stricken farm east of the city.
Following the Picnic in the Park at Victoria Park, the couple then headed to Dubbo College Senior Campus to meet some of the students and teachers.
