Car parking in the area surrounding the hospital has always been a hot topic, with parking at a premium for hospital staff, visitors and patients.
Health Infrastructure has partly listened to the community when putting in extra parking spaces as part of the $150 million stage three and four redevelopment of Dubbo Hospital, but as we have heard time and time again, more space is needed.
The proposal by Dubbo Regional Council gives that space, though at this stage it’s just a proposal, and it still needs to be accepted by the State Government in order to go ahead.
Already Health Infrastructure have delivered a new 280 space car park as part of the $91.3 million Stages one and two redevelopments, and upon completion of stage three and four there will be an additional 131 spaces.
Health Infrastructure say the parking to be delivered meets council’s guidelines.
But the community still don’t agree with this, which is why council are putting forward this proposal.
Earlier this month Nationals candidate for Dubbo Dugald Saunders said he would lobby the state government for the construction of additional car parking spaces on-site at the Dubbo hospital.
One would think the land and plans from council should assist in making sure more parking spaces can be created.
Even with extra parking after the completion of stage three and four residents still tell of driving around the hospital looking for somewhere to park and ending up a long way from their specific destination.
They fear a repeat of the car parking fiasco experienced after the construction of the new Orange Hospital which has since been rectified with more car parks after many long discussions.
Health Infrastructure has worked hard to deliver a state-of-the-art facility at Dubbo Hospital. It has built confidence in the community that continuing redevelopment of the hospital is in good hands. But it will all be for nothing if the community is denied modern, safe and accessible car parking.
We just hope council and the state government can work together to get the parking we need.
