But on Tuesday it was Anthony Atlee who shone in the opening round clash of the Max Shepherd Shield, helping Dubbo Blue (under 14s) to victory over the Barbarians.
Atlee opened the batting alongside Noah Brien and smashed his way to 75 from as many balls before retiring not out.
The Shield competition encourages batters to retire (Harrison Quinn, 51 and Hugh Sienkiewicz, 50 also finished unbeaten), allowing more players a chance to play.
Will Skinner was the Barbarians’ best with ball, claiming Brien for a duck, Rory Madden (6) and Rudy Peet (43) to finish with figures of 3/35 from eight overs.
After helping Dubbo post 4/265 from their 45 overs, Atlee took on the bowling duties and with great success.
Some tight bowling saw him bowl over the Barbarians’ Bailey O’Connor (4) and finish with statistics of 2/18 and one maiden from his six overs.
Dubbo’s bowling attack was fierce across the park, and the Barbarians struggled to make runs.
Warren’s James Glasson was the Barbarians’ best, hitting 46 off the 87 balls he faced, while teammates Kurt Barrett (one from seven), Cooper Giddings (seven from 14), and O’Connor (four from 28) all struggled to get settled in.
The Barbarians’ tail wagged with the Blue Mountains’ Oliver Freeman (19 not out), Mudgee’s Nick McCarney (16), Kane MacFarlane (14) and Bourke’s Cooper Sheridan (14) getting starts, but it wasn’t enough to catch Dubbo Blue’s total.
The Barbarians finished up at 8/153.
In the day’s other matches, Dubbo White (under 13s) lost by just 12 runs to Orange, with Jack Fuller and Fletcher Hyde establishing themselves as players to watch in the future.
The pair scored 50 (off 95 balls) and 30 (off 90) respectively against their older opponents, while Dugald Shepherd (17 not out), Jack Byrne (10) and Blake Smith (10 not out) also got starts.
Aimee Longhurst claimed 1/25 and managed two maidens from her seven overs, while Joshua Townsend claimed 2/15 and one maiden from seven overs.
Meanwhile Blake Kreuzberger starred with the bat and ball in Bathurst’s defeat of Lachlan Valley.
The hard-hitting top order batsman smashed 75 off 65 balls before retiring not out.
Then with the ball in hand, Kreuzberger claimed the wicket of Jaxon Greenway for figures of 1/9 from his three over spell.
On Wednesday, Dubbo Blue face Orange and Dubbo White play Bathurst.
