Orana Mid-Western Police District Acting Commander Superintendent Keith Ridley said the car rollover, carrying nine teenage girls near Mudgee on Sunday was still being investigated.
Police said a Prado had rolled over on a Buckaroo property and a 14-year-old girl was found in a critical condition and airlifted to Westmead Hospital.
“At this stage [Monday] the girl is in a serious but stable condition,” Supt. Ridley said.
The Crash Investigation Unit under Traffic Highway Patrol were looking into the incident.
On Sunday police attended the scene after a car had lost control while crossing the Macquarie River on Falls Road Crossing in Wellington.
About 6.05pm on Sunday five people were rescued from the roof of their 4WD when their vehicle had become stuck in Macquarie River.
Orana Mid-Western Police District Sergeant Adam Wood said the driver attempted to cross the water which had an estimated depth of about 80cm and was flowing faster due to the recent release from Burrendong Dam.
“Halfway across, the vehicle lost traction, the rear of the vehicle swept from the crossing becoming wedged on rocks.
“Once stuck, the occupants of the car climbed onto the roof and bonnet of the vehicle.
“A male witness nearby saw the incident and came to their aid.
“Thankfully the witness downstream had access to a boat.”
The witness provided life vests to the passengers and offloaded them onto the boat and took them to shore.
Police were contacted and the occupants were taken by ambulance paramedics to Wellington Hospital, with one passenger suffering from a minor muscular back injury.
Sgt. Wood praised the efforts of nearby persons who came to their aid.
“Police remind people of the dangers of driving through water or rivers, as this case has demonstrated how easy it is to lose control and put yourself and others at risk.
In a third matter police released information about a 36-year-old man who was arrested and his property seized after Rural Crime Prevention Team investigated illegal activity in the Gongolgon area.
Police conducted a search of a Cooma Street, Quambone home on September 12 and seized an unregistered Nissan Patrol, ammunition and illegal firearms believed to be used for illegal hunting.
He was charged with six offences and is due to appear in Coonamble Local Court on October 16.
