But when principal Andrew Jones jumped up from his chair and began dancing, he was quickly joined by the rest of the Senior Campus staff in a flash mob to send off the graduating class of 2018.
The surprise farewell capped off a moving assembly, which saw captains Hannah Mackie and Daniel Ramirez reminisce about their school days and thank parents and teachers.
Principal Andrew Jones spoke to students about life lessons, the importance of perseverance and resilience, personal growth and change.
“Who you are today does not define who you will become,” he said. “Your HSC does not define who you will become.
“Who you are and where you are now is a great start but remember, to have potential is not enough.
“Saying ‘I could have’ is not good enough, nor an excuse. Your life journey has only just begun, and I wish each and everyone of you success in whatever way life’s journey takes you.
“Your future is up to you.”
Mr Jones concluded his speech with a quote from tennis great Roger Federer: “You will not grow if you are not willing to change.”
Occasional speaker at the graduation was former Dubbo College student, 25-year-old Michael Townsend, who opened his own electrical business at age 20, after completing his apprenticeship.
Mr Townsend said it was critical to make the most of all opportunities provided. He said the old stereotype of the ‘tradie’ had changed with the development of new technologies and changes within the industry.
“These days tradies need to be educated, disciplined and have excellent communication skills,” he said. “The 21 st century tradie is a force to be reckoned with.
“There is no doubt that trades are a growing employment demand and offer huge opportunities to both males and particularly females”
Mr Townsend said he was thankful for his time at Dubbo College where he “made friends for life, was supported by staff and was provided with ample opportunity to achieve”.
He also encouraged students to take initiative and concluded his speech with the quote: “Build your own dreams, or someone will hire you to build theirs.”
The 2018 Dubbo College Year 12 graduation was the culmination of 13 years of school education for 190 students.
All students received a Year 12 portfolio presented by principal Andrew Jones, with a large number also receiving special academic and sporting awards.
Students have now left the college to study for their upcoming Higher School Certificate, with exams set to start on October 18.
