A POLICE operation focused on an area that has a trend of motor vehicle collisions has resulted in a swag of penalty notices being issued to motorists doing the wrong thing.

Operation Ricko Strike Force was conducted at Cobar in the Central North Police District from Thursday, September 13 through to Sunday, September 16.
Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said the operational aim of the strike force was to saturate the Cobar district, in particular the Barrier Highway and Kidman Way, which has seen a recent trend of motor vehicle collisions.
Officers said particular focus was given to the interactions with drivers towing caravans.
The strike force operation resulted in the following results:
- 663 random breath tests
- 63 speeding penalty notices issued
- 40 traffic penalty notices issued
- 3 seatbelt offences detected
- 1 positive roadside drug test for meth
- 1 suspension advice notice issued
- 1 defect notice issued
- 65 caravan driver interactions
The operation also resulted in the following items:
- On Thursday – two heavy vehicle drivers were detected exceeding the speed limit on Kidman Way near Bourke
- On Thursday – an 18 year old Cobar male was stopped riding an e-bike style moped in Cobar. A penalty notice was issued for use unregistered motor vehicle
- On Saturday – a driver was detected travelling at 103km/h in a 50km/h upon the Louth Road, Cobar. The driver’s licence was suspended
- On Saturday – a P2 licence holder was detected travelling at 135km/h in 100km/h area upon Kidman Way, Cobar. The driver submitted a positive roadside breath test, then submitted a negative breath sample at Cobar Police Station. His licence was suspended due to the speed.
