Cr Ben Shields told the Daily Liberal in May that the city has strong royal ties, which is why it should be considered to host the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
This probes the question, did the royals draw make these connections when picking Dubbo as a destination for their October tour?
Cr Shields told The Daily Liberal, Harry and Meghan being both strong conservationists, Dubbo’s Taronga Western Plains Zoo would make a perfect place for them to visit while in Australia.
“His Uncle (Prince Edward) visited the Western Plains Zoo about 10 years ago and his Grandmother (Queen Elizabeth) in 1992,” he said.
“So he’s got to continue the royal tradition. It’s as important as getting married in Westminster Abbey. It’s just got to happen,” he jokingly said.
On a serious note, Cr Shields said Taronga Western Plains Zoo was internationally renowned for its world-class conservation efforts.
“This would clearly be the spot for Harry and Meghan to go to,” he said.
“Dubbo suits well and truly.”
It seems Cr Shields’ prediction was correct as the Palace announced the newlyweds trip will focus on youth leaders, environmental and conservation efforts.
Kensington Palace announced the tour destinations on Monday evening. The pair are visiting Dubbo on the second day of their Australian trip, October 17.
The statement said their Royal Highnesses have been invited to visit the Commonwealth Realms of Australia and New Zealand by the countries' respective governments.
The Duke and Duchess will visit Fiji and Tonga at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
