Sixteen community groups have been awarded a share in more than $280,000 from Dubbo Regional Council.

The largest amount of funding at $160,000 has been awarded to the Dubbo Neighbourhood Centre. The Wellington Information and Neighbourhood Services has been granted $20,000 and Lifeline will receive $15,000.

The Walan Wirringah Women’s Group has been granted $10,000 towards their community garden.

The group, which is comprised of about 25 members, has been establishing the garden at the corner of Macquarie and Tamworth streets.

Kelly Robertson said Walan Wirringah – which translates as ‘strong women’ in Wiradjuri – was a group where women could meet once a week in a safe and supportive environment.

The group recently paired with the Dubbo College South Campus Girls’ Academy to build a garden around the demountables near the front of the school.

But the funding Walan Wirringah has received from council will go towards the community garden. To date, the money for the garden has been made through fundraisers like barbecues. Everything has been recycled or upcycled. 

“It’s almost restored my faith in humanity that their are so many people in the community who want to support our group.”
