A Wellington Correctional Centre inmate was airlifted to Westmead hospital on Saturday following a stabbing attack.

A police spokesman said the 32-year-old was set upon by a number of inmates following a verbal argument between him and another inmate.
The victim was chased during the incident and left with several stab wounds to his upper body.
Correctional officers intervened and put a stop to the attack. The correctional centre was put into lockdown following the event and the wounded inmate was given first-aid.
A helicopter flown in from Orange transported the wounded man to Westmead hospital in western Sydney. The victim’s current condition is described as ‘not life-threatening’.
Detectives arrived at the correction facility and examined the crime scene for evidence.
Four suspected assailants have been identified and spoken to.
CSNSW Acting Commissioner Rosemary Caruana said officers responded admirably.
“Our staff did an outstanding job in assisting the inmate and rendering first aid until health professionals arrived,” Ms Caruana said.
