The scholarship honours the memory of former Mayor of Dubbo and state member for Dubbo Tony McGrane, and has seen twelve students receive $3000 to support them throughout study.
This year’s was a nursing student from Trangie, and past recipients have been from Ballimore, Gilgandra, Dubbo, Parkes, Narromine, Wellington, Coonamble
CSU Dubbo head of campus Cathy Maginnis said she and the university fully supported the scholarship committee in their commitment to fund the scholarship which assisted students who resided in the Orana region.
“Scholarships are essential to assist rural students to engage in higher education because it provides opportunities for them to learn, to improve both their own and their families’ health and well-being, and provides greater employment opportunities.”
Ms Maginnis said the more funds that could be raised, the more scholarships could be awarded to increase students’ chance of achieving their goals.
The evening’s guest speaker will be local Fletchers International abattoir owner Roger Fletcher. Mr Fletcher has had a long relationship with Tony McGrance and with CSU whom awarded him an honorary doctorate in business for his contributions to the western region.
Tony McGrane Scholarship Committee Mr Geoff Wise said the dinner marked the 14th anniversary of Tony McGrane’s death and aimed to guarantee scholarships would continue to support Orana region students.
He said the committee was working on establishing adequate capital funds through tax deductible donations and attendance at the biennial dinners to support future scholarships.
“All these funds are contributed through the CSU Foundation Trust and held specifically for the Tony McGrane Scholarships,” Mr Wise said.
The cost per person to attend the dinner is $150. To book a table or purchase tickets contact the Dubbo RSL Club on 6882 4411.
