Emergency services attended the car crash on the Mitchell Highway 15 kilometres south of Wellington on Tuesday about 7am.  

Police had received reports about a car that had run down a ditch.

Upon arrival police spoke to a 42-year-old Dubbo female and ascertained she was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Police believe she had swerved to avoid hitting a kangaroo, travelling down the embankment before the car stopped. The car sustained significant damage and was towed from the scene.

“The good news was the air bags were deployed, the woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to Wellington hospital for bruising and lacerations to her upper body,” Orana Mid-Western Police District Inspector Dan Skelly said.

“I warn drivers to be on the lookout for wildlife close to roads and towns.

“With the drought they’re coming more and more close to roads and towns because they’re looking for food and water.

“They’re most prominent in the house of the early morning and dusk. 

“Drivers please be aware of the conditions and your surroundings, stay alert, slow down and avoid swerving. Kangaroos can cause significant accidents.”
