Dubbo and surrounding regions could have Australia’s ‘Next Big Thing’ joining national icons such as the Big Banana and Big Merino.

Tourism booking platform Wotif is hunting for somewhere to build an attraction to join Australian icons.

It’s up to community members to nominate a local person, food, animal or any other object in tourism booking platform Wotif’s national search

The public then has two weeks to vote from a list of finalists and the winner will be built by the end of the year.

Wotif managing director Daniel Finch said the competition celebrated the company’s 18th anniversary by giving back to the destinations, tourism providers and travellers that have helped it evolve.

“What better way to do this than by giving Australia something synonymous with the tourism landscape, and which all Aussies love: the next big thing?,” he said.

Research commissioned by Wotif revealed 90 per cent of Australians have visited a big thing, more than half will stop at them on the highway and two in five travel out of their way to see them.

How many of these big things have you seen?

Mr Finch said the critical role of regional Australia in the tourism industry was often overlooked despite the fact it contributed 44 cents of every tourism dollar spent.

“As the search for Australia’s next big thing begins, we are excited to be able to put not just the big cities, but also regional areas on the map – to create excitement within these communities and a new reason to visit, helping to boost local economies,” he said.
