From 8.30 am to 3 pm, Mrs Gibbons will be raising funds for the Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day.
Celebrating 31 years as a national fundraiser event Daffodil Day is hoping to raise $2.1 million in NSW.
By supporting Daffodil Day people will be helping to beat cancer by funding vital cancer research, support services, prevention programs and advocacy campaigns.
Fundraising for a charity is always a good idea, but Mrs Gibbons has a heartbreaking personal reason for her efforts.
“I like to participate because I like contributing to a charity but especially to a cancer charity,” she said.
“I lost my granddaughter on April 27 this year to Melanoma; she was 31.
“That was devastating and I just want to be part of something that finds a cure for cancer.”
Mrs Gibbons lost her beloved granddaughter but wants to help other people to survive the dreaded disease.
“My father died of cancer, but my husband had prostate cancer and has made a full recovery; I also have a friend who had breast cancer, so I’ve been touched by cancer all my life,” she said.
“I think having a local focus to a national issue like this is the key.
“With diseases like cancer it is costly to seek treatment and anything you can do for any charity is helpful because any donation helps to find a cure.
“It would be nice to find a reason why cancer happens so that no one ever has to get it again.”
Mrs Gibbons said she enjoys getting out into the community on Daffodil Day.
“It’s a lovely day, people come along and often tell me whats happening with their family, they all have a little chat which is very nice,” she said.
“It shows that people have a common goal to help people less fortunate.”
