Dubbo will share in more than $65,000 from the scheme which will be used to improve disability access to public transport infrastructure.

Mayor Ben Shields said this helps the council’s aim to make Dubbo the most disability-friendly city in Australia.

“This funding has come at a very good time as the council is improving accessibility around the city,” he said.

“The council has made clear its commitment to residents with disabilities by creating the Disability Technical Panel.

“The panel consists of a group of local experts to help drive our vision of Dubbo being the most disability-friendly city in Australia.

“Two million dollars has been allocated over four years from the council for accessible infrastructure improvements.  This new funding from the state government will be a further boost to our vision and help to make public transport more user-friendly.”

Member for Dubbo Troy Grant said the primary focus of the scheme was to improve accessibility for customers with vision impairment and wheelchairs.

“All projects are required to meet the disability standards for accessible public transport and I am delighted to see Dubbo Regional Shire receive funding for projects in their area,” he said.

“This funding will see four new bus shelters delivered to Dubbo Regional Council with a further four shelters in the area upgraded to meet disability access standards.

“Trangie Central School will also benefit from three new bus shelters making it easier for students with disabilities to travel on local buses.”

More than $1.9 million is available for the 2017-2019 Country Passenger Transport Infrastructure Scheme, which provides subsidies to support the construction or upgrade of bus stop infrastructure owned and maintained by regional councils across New South Wales.

The funding will support projects such as upgraded bus shelters, security lighting, new bus stop seats, timetable information boards and tactile board.
