Orana Mid-Western Police District Investigations Manager Mark Meredith said a 29-year-old man in the area of Margaret Crescent was approached, spoken too, searched and then arrested in relation to outstanding matters on Tuesday.
“He fled from police, two officers gave chase and the male then assaulted one of the female constables, punching her in the face to resist arrest,” Sergeant Meredith said.
The officer was not severely injured and was able to continue in the search.
“As a result the man ran in the direction of the Macquarie River, jumped in and swam to the Western side, and was chased by police on the Dundullimal Homestead side of the river.
Sergeant Meredith said the police pursuit began about 4pm when three general duty police vehicles, a number of detective vehicles, Target Action Group (TAG) personnel and other police pursued the man along the river.
Police searched on the western and eastern sides of the Macquarie River from the Margaret Crescent area to the Butlers Falls reserve.
“A number of police resources were utilised to search for the man to some hours to no avail.”
The search was called off about 5:30pm on Tuesday as investigations continued.
“The outstanding matters and the man were discussed [on Wednesday] morning and the search continued.”
About 10.40am police received information from the public and as a result the male was arrested in vicinity the Troy Reserve Area near the Macquarie River by Dubbo detectives and TAG police.
Police said the man was found hiding behind a tree on the riverbank.
He was returned to Dubbo Police Station and charged with a number of stealing offences, resist arrest, assault police, custody of a knife in a public place and intimidation relating to a domestic violence incident.
He was refused bail and is due to appear at Dubbo Local Court on Thursday.
Sergeant Meredith said there were quite a lot of kilometres covered in the search.
“It is pleasing when we have matters such as that, where we react to matters of concern for the community and matters that involve violence.
“I guess that reaction to that incident was instant, in the sense that we congregated on that area and we are certainly thankful to a number of residents in that area that assisted police with information.
