It’s hard to imagine Saturday’s Group 11 derby being much better for Jyie Chapman.

The CYMS centre scored four tries in an utterly dominant ninth straight victory over Macquarie, while he was also able to savour a near complete team performance which resulted in the Raiders being held scoreless.
But on top of the man of the match effort in the 56-0 romp, Chapman was also wearing an Indigenous round jersey which his family played a huge role in bringing to the club.
“It’s always good to put on these Aboriginal colours and represent the family,” he said after the win at Apex Oval.
“Every time a game like this comes around I love it, there’s nothing better.”
Chapman was simply outstanding in CYMS’ demolition of its crosstown rival.
As well as scoring four tries in a trademark full-throttle performance, Chapman also had a major hand in two other four-pointers and was a constant threat in attack and when running the ball out of his own half.
Against a vastly under-strength Raiders side which had five players backing up from reserve grade, Chapman scored an early double and when his brilliant chip and chase on the edge led to John Grey scoring and making it 30-0 at the break, the game was all but over.
With a number of Fishies exiting the game through injury, and the score blowing out, the intensity dropped slightly in the second half but Chapman was still on hand to bag two late tries and help his side post the biggest win over Macquarie in more than five years.
“I got a bit lucky a couple of times and just had to dive over the line but it’s what we do. The boys lift for each other and we pick up and try and go to another gear,” Chapman said, before speaking about the try he set up for Grey.
“I think that was a bit of luck but you’ve got to back yourself at those times when you’re one-on-one.
“You’ve got to have the confidence in yourself and when you’ve got someone like Johnny Grey outside you, you know he’ll always be there.”
While the attack was scintillating at times, it was the defensive effort which stood out the most for the Fishies.
The Raiders lacked any real penetration due to the likes of key attacking figures Chris Daley, Lewis Stanley and Sam Thorpe all missing but the few times the men in sky blue did have extended periods of possession, CYMS was up to the task.
“You aspire to do stuff like that and in games like that, you want to keep them to zero,” Chapman said.
“I think we had 12 players on the field at one stage and to keep them to zero is unbelievable.”
The reason the undefeated minor premiers in waiting had 12 players on late in game is due to a number of injuries.
Alex Bonham and Billy Sing both made their return but the former failed to finish the game due to an ankle complaint while Lincoln and Wade Kavanagh, Bayden Searle, and Grey also exited the game.
Grey’s injury in particular is a worry, as he suffered a flare-up of a troublesome hamstring injury he has battled for a number of years.

Grey injured his hamstring in the process of scoring his second try right on half-time while Searle came off with a neck complaint shortly after scoring early in the second stanza.
Jarryn Powyer’s hard running resulted in a second half double while Chapman scored the last two of the games to ice the result.
Brad Pickering was again brilliant with the boot and he landed eight of 10 conversion, a number of those from the sideline.
Macquarie coach Dylan Hill was more frustrated than dejected at full-time, largely due to the fact so many players were missing due to injury, illness and family commitments.
“It wasn’t the ideal situation for us,” Hill said.
“We only had 12 players before the game so I had to call reserve graders up and full credit to them, they played a physical game in reggies and then backed up for me and that’s what this club is all about.
“But it would have been good to have the full squad on the park and really test ourselves against CYMS.”
The season is still alive for the Raiders with victory needed at Wellington next weekend so make certain a place in the finals.
