In 2014 the Buninyong Public School teaching team decided to embark on a long-term learning journey that would explore and develop teacher leadership, that decision has led to the school receiving an Australian Council for Educational Leaders award.

The school’s teachers decided to focus on improvements to the teaching of writing across the school.

Buninyong Public School External mentor Anne-Marie Furney said In 2014 student performance in writing was causing serious concern.

“The team decided to adopt a coaching approach to professional learning, and Buninyong Public School is a school of teacher leaders,” she said. “Everyone is invested in the belief that teachers can make a difference to learning outcomes and that regardless of circumstances all children deserve a truly first-class education that prepares them for a quality life in the twenty-first century.”

School principal Anne van Dartel said winning an educational leadership award shows the schools focus on improving every teacher in every room has worked.
