The Australian Rural Leadership Foundation has developed a leadership program that immerses participants in challenging situations in remote parts of the country and overseas.
Mr Ferraro, the Soil Conservation Service general manager, spent two weeks in Indonesia as part of the program, interacting with the 6000 families who live at a massive landfill site in Jakarta.
“Talking to the woman who runs these programs reminded us that leadership is not about a position or a title, but a desire to make a difference,” he said.
The experience has already inspired others within the company to join the program, like Hunter regional manager Dan Brown.
“If you’ve got a vision for the future in your organisation, challenging your way of thinking can allow you to give something back to the community and produce more positive change,” Mr Brown said.
He said by the end of the conversation he had with Mr Ferraro about the program he knew he wanted to take part and had basically completed half of his entry form.
The 15-month Australian Rural Leadership Program aims to inspire people in leadership roles in rural and regional Australia to develop intuitive leadership skills that help them respond well in complex situations.
Mr Ferraro will complete the program in October.
